Services --

The Kossuth County Conservation Board offers a variety of services for private landowners interested in establishing wildlife habitat on their property. Technical advice is available for tree planting, native grass seeding, food plots, and wildlife nesting structures.

Trees

The Kossuth County Conservation Board annually assists individuals in ordering seedling trees for wildlife plantings. The trees are ordered in the fall and are distributed through the Smith Lake office the following April. Assistance in the design of a tree planting or windbreak is available.  Trees may be ordered during tree order days in September, or later by appointment.  Tree planters as well as tree bars are available for your tree planting needs.  For more information see Habitat Equipment.

Native Grass

The Kossuth County Conservation Board staff will assist landowners in planning and ordering seed for a native grass planting.  Native seed ordering days are held in February each year.  Date and time will be announced.  Reasonable rates for large quantities of high quality seed will be available. Conventional and no-till drills are available for rent.  Custom native grass seeding is available as well.  Check out Habitat Equipment and Custom Grass Seeding for more information.

Food Plots

The Kossuth County Conservation Board annually distributes free corn and sorghum seed for wildlife food plots.  Contact the Smith Lake office for details.

Wildlife Nesting Structures

For those interested in building nesting structures, the Kossuth County Conservation Board provides design assistance for building structures for the following species:  Wood Duck, Goose, Mallard, Bluebird, and American Kestrel.

Custom Grass Seeding

Custom grass drilling is available for CRP plantings, filterstrips, waterways, etc.  The Kossuth County Conservation Board supplies tractor, operator, and grass drill.  Native grass seed may be ordered through the Kossuth County Conservation Board.  See the following requirements for custom grass seeding:

1.      The tract must be primarily warm season grasses

2.      The fee is $35.00 per acre with a minimum of  $100 per tract.

3.      Prior to planting, the Kossuth County Conservation Board will be supplied with a seeding plan that should include an aerial map of the tract to be seeded, the type of seed to be used, and the seeding rate.

4.      The planting boundaries must be clearly marked.

5.      The ground must be prepared to meet the planting requirements.

6.      The land must be in Kossuth County.
